30 Day Crochet Challenge [Day 12]

Published March 3, 2012 by doodlebumpkin

Okay, okay, okay I know you’re supposed to post these 30 day challenge things over the span of 30 days. However I neglected my blog over the holidays. I know, I’m horrible. Well, here it is…

Day 12: Where do you keep your stash?

Below is a photo of one of my stash buckets. I get those storage containers from Walmart and I usually have 2 for finished products and 1 for yarn. However, I have been staying with my parents in NY (I’m usually in TN for school and stuff) Well anyway, the point is that my room here is the size of a closet therefore I only have one bucket. I also have a couple of those “green” shopping bags from Joanne’s that I keep some stuff in. :)

Day 11: Do you have a “Crocheting Hero” or someone that is just way too awesome for their own good? Do share!

Yes, I do actually. I love Rebecca Bessette’s work. She crochets, but she also paints and is basically an all around artist. Her stuff is so amazing, I wish I could crochet like she does. I even love the photos she takes for her shop. She sells so much stuff, I aspire to be like her someday. :D  Here is her etsy shop: http://www.etsy.com/shop/BessetteArt?ref=pr_shop_more

I absolutely love these two items:

Day 10: Do you have a favorite pattern or designer?

I really don’t use patterns because I not patient enough. If something is so hard to make that I have to refer to a pattern then I don’t wanna mess with it. When I create an item I usually write down some notes to remember how I made it, but it’s not usually a pattern. I only have true patterns for a few items I make. The patterns are listed under the patterns section of this blog. :D

Day 9: What fiber or yarn do you love working with?

My favorite type of yarn is Lion Brand Homespun. It is so soft, it almost feels silky, and it’s chunky. I love thick, chunky yarn. It is perfect for making warm scoodies and hats. I also really like cotton yarn. It doesn’t stretch as much as acrylic so it’s really nice for making bags and purses. :)

Day 8: Your most challenging?

My most challenging project was my Granny Square scoodie. It took forever to make all those little granny squares. Plus I’m not very good at math, which is a skill you should definitely  have when designing clothes to fit properly. It took me forever to figure out how big the hood pieces had to be to properly cover one’s head. Then, I had to sew all the little squares together. Don’t even get me started on how terrible my hand sewing skills are. It seems like I can never hand sew anything without a big bulky seem and knot showing. So, I spent forever carefully sewing up the squares and making sure no seems or knots showed. When I found a seem I was unhappy with I undid the whole thing and started over. And that, my friends, is the reason why I will only be making one granny sqaure scoodie. She is a one of a kind, unless of course I get a custom order. I always come through on custom order requests. :)

Day 7: Your least favorite?

My least favorite project is a hat that I made for one of my friends. I hadn’t learned how to read patterns yet and didn’t know how to make a hat at all. I started at the brim of the hat and worked my way up. I essentially made a really long and wide tube. Then I tried to stitch it together at the top by skipping stitches. It was a holy mess by the time I got done with it. My friend still acted super excited to get it and said she loved it. I have the greatest friends. :)

Day 6: What is your favorite piece that you’ve crochet?

Hmmm, this one is a toughie. Right now my favorite piece is probably my purple beanie. I love purple, it’s my favorite right now.

However, my favorite piece of all time has got to be my football scoodie. My boyfriend actually helped me come up with the idea and pattern. I was looking for something that guys would like. It turned out to be a big hit. It was even featured in the “Etsy Finds” email last year during the Super Bowl. I got over 1000 views that day. :D

Day 5: How long did it take from the time your learned how to crochet, to finish your first project?

Well, my first project was a granny square (with the help of my grandma) and I did that in one sitting. My first solo project was a cotton candy color beanie. That hat took me about 2 days. I’ve always made my projects fast. I can’t stand leaving a project unfinished, even for a few hours. As soon as I start a new project I don’t even like to take a break until it’s finished. :]

Day 3: Do you have any other WIPs (works in progress)?

Hmmm, this question is a bit repetitive. But yes, as I stated in my previous post I am working on a whole new line of beanies, some booties, and a new line of fingerless gloves. I trying to stock up my shop for winter. :) Since that question was so repetitive I’ve decided to also do day four.

Day 4: How did you learn how to crochet?

My grandma thought me how to crochet. (While she was running her granny square sweat shop that I told you about. XD) I first learned to crochet on my finger, not a hook . When you learn like that you can see exactly how each strand of yarn must turn and fold to create each tiny knot. It makes it easier when you do move up to the hook and understand how the yarn should move.

Here is a cool video tutorial of how to finger crochet a chain stitch. All I ever learned to finger crochet was a chain stitch and single crochet, but there are people out there who make full projects using only their hands, it’s quite amazing. :)

Day 2: What is currently on your hooks?

I am working on so many projects right now. Today I plan on finishing a new rainbow skull cap. I’m working on a whole new line of beanies right now. I’ve been making about 2-3 beanies a day this week. I’m also working on a new line of fingerless mittens. The kind that have a thumb part with a mitten part that comes on and off. Andddd, I am also working on a pair of navy blue elf booties that I got a special request for. :P
